GCSEC PARTICIPATED TO FIRST 2011 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE – VIENNA

The annual FIRST conference provides a setting for conference participants to attend a wide range of presentations delivered by leading experts in both the CSIRT field and from the global security community: this year the 23rd annual FIRST conference took place in Vienna, from 12th to 17th of June, 2011.
In this context, Igor Nai Fovino, GCSEC Research Manager, as invited speaker gave a speech on the theme: “Worldwide Security and Resiliency of Cyber Infrastructures: The Role of the Domain Name System”.
On the light of the massive use of ICT technologies in critical infrastructures, he analyzed at high level the centrality of the DNS in maintaining citizen critical infrastructures operative, taking as explicative example the power system. After providing a high level functional description of the energy system he showed how several critical operations at different levels (technical, operational and organizational) completely rely on the well working of the domain name system.
Through the description of attack scenarios impacting the DNS and, as side effect, the energy system, he demonstrated how the security, stability and resilience of the domain name system should be matter of deep debate at international, cross-country level.
Finally, he presented to the international fora the “Measuring domain Name System health”project, an internationally coordinated initiative promoted by GCSEC on this purpose.
